Tales from Castle Duncraig

Writer in Residence

Like the Scottish castle from which it takes its name Duncraig Senior High School is full of stories.

During Term 2 the students in Years 8, 9 and 10 have a rare chance to become published authors and illustrators. The anthology, Tales from the Castle will be published again this year and will contain short stories and illustrations produced by the most talented students.

I am very excited to be involved in this project again this year. Last week I delivered introductory workshops to all the Lower School students who began to write stories. Between now and Week Eight each student will send a draft of their story to me by email. I will act as editor, reading and commenting on their stories before sending them back to the students. In Week Eight I will go into the school again and deliver a series of ‘trouble shooting’ workshops based on the most common problems I have encountered in their work. Their finished copies will go first to their English teacher as part of their Term assessment. Then the best of the stories will go to a publication committee for a decision about whether or not they will be included in the anthology. Art students will then read the stories and produce illustrations, including a cover for this years very professionally published anthology.

The two previous anthologies has been well worth reading and have sold out. I am sure that this one will be just as good, if not better.
